As far as people being better are concerned, its an ever increasing circle, the people that are better used to be the same level as us, they only got better cos they were trying to become as good as the person that was better than them
I used to really suck believe me, i mean really suck, i was using bryce *bleh doing renders of really shitty textures and chrome balls, you know, the average newb stye renders!! The fact that you have jumped straight into MAYA is admirable indeed, i use cinema4d, i dont think i'll ever change, i love the layout. I used maya at uni for a few hours and i found it really hard, but then again that was like 2 years ago!
As for the bejamin, ive been really caught up trying to get a website up for prospective employers, its not finished, the design isnt there but you can see what i've got so far benservice.com Also i got really caught up with this project, i've got another in the pipeline and then i'll be doing the benjamin, trust me!!!
